Natural Oral Care Products: Do They Work?
May 31, 2025 9:00 amNatural oral care products have found a loyal following—especially among people who want fewer artificial ingredients in their routines. From charcoal toothpaste to essential oil mouth rinses, the shelves have many natural options that feel cleaner, gentler, and sometimes even trendier.
But natural doesn’t always mean effective. When it comes to dental health, what’s in the tube matters just as much as what’s not.
Popular Ingredients: What Helps, What Might Not
Some ingredients have promise. Baking soda, for example, is mildly abrasive and helps neutralize acid in the mouth. It’s even used in many traditional toothpastes. Xylitol is another—it helps prevent cavity-causing bacteria from sticking to teeth.
Others, like coconut oil or aloe vera, have limited scientific support but can help freshen breath or soothe tissues. They’re fine as part of a bigger routine—but don’t do the heavy lifting on their own.
Charcoal toothpaste gets a lot of hype for whitening. It may scrub away surface stains, but it can also wear down enamel. That can lead to sensitivity or yellowing over time. Similarly, bentonite clay may “detox,” but there’s not much research backing up those claims.
Many natural toothpastes skip ingredients like sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), a foaming agent that helps spread toothpaste evenly. While SLS can irritate sensitive mouths, it also helps remove debris and plaque.
The Fluoride Factor (And a Promising Alternative)
Many natural toothpastes skip fluoride. That’s a key difference—and a big one. Fluoride helps remineralize enamel and prevent decay. Without it, even regular brushing may not provide the same level of protection.
That said, there’s growing interest in hydroxyapatite, a naturally occurring mineral that makes up much of our tooth enamel. Some studies suggest it may help rebuild and protect enamel similarly to fluoride. It’s considered safe and is already used in some parts of the world. However, fluoride still has the most research behind it and remains the top recommendation from most dental professionals.
